Beneath the waves lies a tiny fish, perhaps the wisest artist you've never heard of. The white-spotted pufferfish, a humble little member of the pufferfish family, spends his days not swimming aimlessly or hiding in coral but making art.
Not just any art, he builds massive, intricate sand mandalas on the ocean floor, spiraling patterns so beautiful that even we humans can’t help but gawk.
And what’s his purpose? Love, of course. He’s hoping to woo a mate. But he also teaches us something deeper—about craft, attention, joy, and the kind of quiet, inspired living that blooms when we stop rushing and start really tuning in.
Let’s paddle into his watery world for a moment and see what this finned philosopher has to say. As we drift along, we might just stumble upon a pufferfish mandala, where every bubble is a burst of wisdom waiting to be discovered!
One Fin at a Time: The Zen of the pufferfish mandala
The pufferfish doesn’t charge into his design like a fish on a deadline. He doesn’t chase perfection with flustered energy. Instead, he starts small. A flick of the fin here, a nudge of sand there. In fact, if you were to watch him work, it might look like he’s dancing through a slow, meditative movement that seems less like effort and more like effortless flow.
He clears the rough sand away and gathers the finest grains for the center of his mandala. Coarse pebbles? They don’t belong here. Only the softest, most flowing material will do. Isn’t that exactly what we’re doing in our own mindful lives?
Every morning we sit, breathe, stretch, walk, and journal—we’re not bulldozing through life. We’re refining. We’re making space. We’re gathering the fine sand of stillness, presence, and kindness and slowly sculpting our days into something more meaningful.
Like monks tending a garden with hand-raked gravel, we move with care. With presence. One fin at a time.
Seashells and Sprinkles: Joy Is the Decoration
Now here’s the best part: after sculpting his masterpiece, the pufferfish decorates it. He finds tiny seashells and places them along the outer rings, like a kid icing a cake or a dancer tying ribbons around her ankles.
Are the shells necessary? Nope. Do they serve a purpose in attracting a mate? Maybe. But they definitely sparkle. They’re the joy, the flourish, and the laughter at the end of a deep breath. They are, in their own right, the soul’s sprinkles.
And aren’t we all better for a few seashells in our practice? A candle during meditation. A nature walk instead of noticing the ding of the inbox. A warm drink held with both hands. These aren’t distractions. They’re sacred additions. The smile in the practice. The glimmer in the groove.
The pufferfish reminds us that beauty is part of the process, not an afterthought, as the Zen teacher D.T. Suzuki chimes:
“The true purpose of art is not to create beautiful objects, but to cultivate a beautiful mind.”
The Tide Washes In, and Still He Creates
Imagine this: he finishes his mandala. It’s perfect. It glows with balance and rhythm and charm. And then, the tide comes in. Waves. Currents. Chaos. And just like that, hours or even days of work are gone. Wiped away like chalk from a blackboard. Does he rage against the sea? Nope. He starts again.
In this way, the pufferfish becomes our Zen teacher. His mandala is his practice, not his product. He teaches us that what matters most isn’t holding on; it’s showing up. It’s starting fresh. It’s bowing to impermanence with grace and maybe even a little joy.
Because let’s be honest: life is a little wavy. One day our morning mindful practice is bliss; the next day it’s a jumble of to-do lists. One week we’re flowing with energy, the next we’re stuck in seaweed. It’s okay. The sand is always waiting, and so are we.
Our Own Underwater Mandala for Inspired Living
So what if our life were a mandala in the making? Not something we have to finish or perfect, but something we return to, again and again, with love.
Each day, we clear a little space. Filter out the clunky thoughts. Gather the soft, fine sand of awareness and peace. And when the moment feels right, decorate; with music, smiles, tea, dance, silliness, and awe.
We do it, not because it will be permanent. We do it because the act of doing it makes us feel vibrantly alive.
The pufferfish doesn’t wait for inspiration to strike. He swims into it. He crafts his beauty, not because he’s told to, but because it’s his nature. And maybe, just maybe, it’s ours too.
Swim Lightly, Sculpt Boldly
Inspired living doesn’t always come in bursts of motivation or fireworks of productivity. Sometimes, it arrives gently, like the ripple of water on sand, like the arc of a fin shaping a circle.
We don’t need to rush. We don’t need to prove it. We just need to keep showing up. Refining our craft. Honoring the practice. Making beauty in the depths.
And maybe toss in a seashell or two.
Cheers!
